New games shouldn't be given priority to new systems

This week it was announced that a new Borderlands game would be coming out. Hooray! Then it was specified that it would coming to PS3, Xbox 360, and PC. Upon hearing this news, the internet and commenters reacted as expected. "WTF no Sony/Microsoft where are the games?" "Come on! Why are you making it for old systems nobody plays anymore"

Well when I heard then news I responded with my usual "Oh nice". After reading those comments I thought it was a no brainer to bring it to the "old" systems instead of the new ones. Primarily because of install base. Yes I understand that some people traded in their old systems when the new ones came out, which is an issue I'm not going to touch at this time, but that does not mean that every game that comes out should be available to you.

We are currently in that gray area where next gen and current gen lines are being blurred as far as what game a console will go to. Do you go with the latest and greatest or do you go with what will give you a higher install base? The PS3 and 360 will continue to be supported for some time. I'll give it a year or so before devs start moving away from them at a fairly large pace. Until then, I'll just sit back with my PS3, Vita, and PS4 and complain about my inability to play Bravely Default because I don't have a 3DS.
